In Connecticut I know of four proposed new cinemas that are already under construction or should begin soon:

Wallingford, CT: 12 screens planned for the former KMart building on Colony Road. Zoning approval has been given and negotiations are underway for a theatre operator. Holiday Cinemas which currently runs multiplexes in Waterbury and Meriden is vying for this one.

Lisbon, CT: 12 screen new build planned at Lisbon Landing shopping plaza. Northeast CT is woefully underscreened (3 screens for about 250,000 people) and this should help that situation. O'Neil Theatres is the operator here.

New Haven, CT: 5 screen art theatre to be put in the former United Illuminating building on Temple Street. Cinema will be known as the Criterion Five. Site work is underway.

West Hartford, CT: 6 screen art theatre proposed for new Blue Back Square district in trendy West Hartford Center. Board of Education building (former Town Hall) would be demolished except for the facade and this theatre would be built that site.

Does anybody know any details of any other proposed cinemas around the country?

Los Angeles / San Bernadino Area:
1. AMC Santa Anita 16 - Opening Fall 2004
This theatre is in a mall expansion.

2. AMC Victoria Gardens 16 (Rancho Cucamonga) - Opening 2005
This theatre is being built in the Victoria Gardens district about 3 miles north of the AMC Ontario Mills 30 and Edwards 22. Interesting to see as this theatre AMC Wants to be an overflow for Ontario.

3. Krikorian Pico Rivera - Planned, nothing set in stone.

4. Time Square 12, Monterey Park - Planned, looks to fizzle out soon however.
Monterey Park's idea to an entertainment centre to compete with Alhambra.

Thats about all in Los Angeles, not much construction. I know th

Press Release reads (see bottom of Release)

A suivre...

That's hilarious! I can't believe they would actually call it that! It's like saying "It's entirely too much cinema for any human being to handle, and we're okay with that." [Rolling on Floor Laughing]

A new 8-screen theatre is going to open near the main UConn campus in Mansfield, CT. It will be run by Cinema North. It will be the first indoor cinema in the Tolland County since a twin cinema in Vernon closed about 8 years ago.

I was reading the articles passed around my office about theatre related stuff and I was shocked to find that AMC is building a 16 Screener at the Eastridge Mall in San Jose, CA.

San Jose is an area that has GOT to be overscreened by now, and any further developments are just going to eat into the profitability of EVERYBODY'S business.

And I'm pissed cause I don't get in free to AMC.

Somebody from AMC, please be my friend. [Razz]

I like how most new theatres being built are within the 12-16 range. No more 20, 24, or 30 monstrosities. Have 16 quality big theatres instead of 22 small and 8 large auditoriums.

Just because they're building 12-16 screens instead of 20-30 doesn't mean they're making the auditoriums any bigger.

We're actually getting a 20-plex this year (Century). Stacked up against the local competition, I'd charge $10 for tickets Fri-Sat, and probably have no problem.

Perhaps they'll leave out those extra small ~50 seat auditoriums the godzilla plexes always seem to have. 10-16 screens seems to be a decent size for a theatre, IMO, 20 something screens is too many!

St. Louis, AMC are planning to build a new 14 screen at the Westfield Shoppingtown Chesterfield (what was Chesterfield Mall). They say it should be open in 2005. I find this interesting since there was a 4 plex that was there has been closed for a while. I'm guessing since Westfield rebuilt the West County mall with sucess, Chesterfield might run the same course.
